Elliot pushed open the bathroom door. The sounds of a shower running came from the other side. The water stopped and Johannes Matherson—Systems Administrator for Hellinix London, stepped out.

Elliot waved at him. “Hello again!”

Johannes jumped and quickly grabbed his robe, wrapping it around himself. “How did you get in here? I thought you said I’d never see you again!”

“I don’t remember saying that. Come outside. I need your help.” Elliot beckoned the man to walk past him.

“The police bomb disposal guy said I was lucky that device you put on my bed didn’t go off by itself. He said it was shoddily constructed. A real amateur effort.”

Elliot prodded the man with his cane. “Everyone’s a bloody critic. He’s just jealous. Move it!”

Johannes jumped again when he saw Millicent sitting on the bedside chair. “Who the hell are you?”

“I’m his supervisor. I just came along to make sure he was doing a good job with the torture.”

Johannes paled. “Torture?”

“Sit on the bed,” ordered Elliot.

“The both of you are cracked.” Johannes lowered himself warily to the mattress. “What do you want this time?”

Elliot remained standing. “This one is simple. I want your keycard for the Hellinix office and the latest passwords. Any issues and I’ll cut your bloody balls off.”

Millicent shook her head. “Right, that’s it. This is a supervisor intervention. I’m tagging you out.”

“What?” cried Elliot. “I was getting it done. This is textbook.”

“Yeah, under the chapter marked, what not to do. Your approach lacks any subtlety or finesse. I told you before. You always want to sort out everything with your sword. You need to learn to calm down and think a situation through before jumping in like a hyperactive serial killer.”

“Well, let’s ask Mr. Administrator here…” Elliot turned to Johannes. “How was I doing? Would you have given up the codes and passwords to me?”

Johannes looked from one to the other. His jaw was partially open. His breath wheezed with every short, sharp inhalation. “Of course,” he said. “You threatened to cut my balls off.”

Elliot turned on Millicent. “See!”

“But… Look, she’s got a point,” said Johannes. “Let’s be honest. There was no subtlety in your approach. You went nuclear right away.”

Elliot glared at him. “Shut up! I don’t care what you think.”

“Alright,” said Millicent. “Manners. There’s no reason to lose your professional poise. Watch and learn.” She looked at Johannes. “Let’s take this as though I’d just come into the room, agreed?”

“Sure.” Sweat beaded on Johannes’ forehead. “Why not?”

Millicent pulled out her pistol and attached a suppressor. “Mr. Matherson, we’re only after one thing and then I promise you we will leave you alone.”

“I understand,” said Johannes in a whimper.

“There’s some information we need access to. A map of your company’s Swiss bunker site. Is there any way you can log in from here and get it for us?”

“I—I just need my company laptop.” He pointed to it where it was sitting atop a small table just behind Elliot.

Elliot passed it to him.

“Now watch him. In case he tries to do something silly.
